Cuban Onion Steak: A Treat for the Taste Buds

This dish is a timeless classic of Cuban cuisine. The onion steak combines simple ingredients like garlic, onion, and bitter orange to create a delicious mix that enhances the flavor of the meat. Here’s how to make it easily and full of flavor.

🥩 Main Ingredients:

  • 4 large beef steaks (preferably Palomilla cut)
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
  • 10 garlic cloves
  • 1 large white onion
  • 2 bitter oranges
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Fresh parsley sprigs

🕰️ Step 1: Marinate for Flavor

Crush the garlic in a mortar with a pinch of salt. Slice the onion into half-moons and squeeze the juice of the oranges over it using a strainer. Add the crushed garlic and mix well.

In a wide container, alternate layers of onion and steaks, seasoning with salt and pepper to taste and drenching with the juice. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

🔥 Step 2: Sear the Meat

Remove from the fridge and let it come to room temperature. Heat a thick skillet with a tablespoon of oil. Remove each steak, shake off excess onion, and sear on both sides. Repeat with all steaks and set aside.

🧅 Step 3: Cook with Onion

Add a bit more oil to the skillet, heat it, and place the steaks back in, this time with plenty of onion on top. Cook over medium heat until the meat reaches the desired doneness and the onions are golden and fragrant.

📌 Step 4: Serve Hot

Serve immediately, topped with sautéed onions and garnished with fresh parsley. Add a bit of the pan juice to enhance the flavor.
