Cuban Torrejas with Homemade Syrup
Torrejas in syrup are a traditional Cuban delicacy that combines bread soaked in spiced milk, fried in oil, and bathed in a fragrant syrup. Below, we show you how to prepare them easily at home.
🍞 Main ingredients:
- 1 baguette-style loaf, several days old
- 1 liter whole milk
- 5½ tablespoons sugar
- 1 piece of green lemon peel
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 2 tablespoons dry wine
- 1 pinch of salt
- 3 eggs
- Vegetable oil for frying
🍯 For the syrup:
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1 cup water
- ½ teaspoon vanilla
- 1 cinnamon stick
👨🍳 Preparation:
Heat the milk together with the sugar, cinnamon, dry wine, lemon peel, and salt. Remove from the heat and let it infuse. Meanwhile, cut the bread into medium-thick diagonal slices. Soak them with the warm milk until well impregnated.
Prepare the syrup with the sugar, cinnamon, water, and vanilla over medium heat until reaching a light thread stage.
Beat the eggs and dip the slices into the beaten eggs. Fry them in hot oil until golden on both sides. Drain and place them in a deep dish, covering them with the prepared syrup.
