Cuban-Style Uruguayan Steak: Tradition and Flavor on One Plate

Uruguayan steak is a beloved classic on the Cuban table. Thinly pounded beef fillets, stuffed with ham and cheese, breaded and fried until golden and flavorful. In this recipe, I show you how to prepare it at home with outstanding results.

🥩 Required ingredients:

  • 4 large beef steaks (top sirloin recommended)
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • ½ teaspoon ground oregano
  • 1 sour orange (juice only)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 8 thin slices of ham
  • 4 medium slices of Gouda cheese
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup bread crumbs
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Fresh parsley for garnish
  • Garlic powder (optional)
  • Dried parsley (optional)

🔪 Step 1: Preparation and marinade

Flatten the steaks with a meat mallet until they are thin and even. Place them in a large container.

In a mortar, crush the garlic with the salt until smooth. Add the black pepper, oregano, and sour orange juice. Spread this marinade over the steaks, making sure they are well coated on both sides. Cover and refrigerate for at least one hour.

🥓🧀 Step 2: Stuff and seal

Lay the marinated steaks flat on a work surface. Place one slice of ham in the center, followed by a slice of cheese and another slice of ham. Fold the sides toward the center to form a tightly sealed oval bundle.

🥚 Step 3: Breading

Place the beaten eggs in one bowl and the bread crumbs in another. If desired, enhance the flavor by mixing a pinch of garlic powder and dried parsley into the bread crumbs.

Carefully dip each steak into the egg, then coat with bread crumbs, pressing gently so the coating adheres well. Secure each piece with toothpicks to prevent them from opening during frying.

🔥 Step 4: Frying

Heat enough oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat (340°F / 170°C). Fry the steaks without overcrowding, turning them once golden. Cook until evenly colored and crispy.

Remove from the oil, discard the toothpicks, and place on paper towels to drain excess oil. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve immediately.
