Traditional Cuban Guava Jam
Guava jam holds a special place among the most beloved flavors of Cuban cuisine. Its fruity aroma, vibrant color, and balanced sweetness make it an excellent choice to enjoy with bread, crackers, or simply by the spoonful as an authentic tropical dessert.
🍈 Ingredients for the recipe:
- 2 cups ripe guava pulp
- 1 cup refined white sugar
- Enough water
- 1 pinch of salt
🚿 Prepare the guavas:
Carefully wash the guavas, remove the ends, and peel them if desired. Then cut them into small pieces and place them in a large pot with enough water to cover them completely. Cook over medium-high heat for about 20 minutes until they become fully soft.
🥣 Drain and reserve:
Once tender, remove the guavas from the pot and drain them well. Save part of the cooking liquid because it will later help adjust the final consistency of the jam.
⚙️ Process the pulp:
Place the guavas in a blender and process them while gradually adding small amounts of the reserved water until a smooth and manageable mixture is obtained. The ideal texture should be creamy, neither too thick nor too runny.
🧺 Remove the seeds:
Pass all the pulp through a large metal strainer to separate the seeds and achieve a much smoother and more pleasant texture.
🔥 Cook the jam:
Pour 2 cups of the strained pulp into a pot along with the sugar, the pinch of salt, and ¼ cup of water. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon to prevent sticking to the bottom. After about 25 minutes, the mixture will develop a bright red color and a thick consistency.
❄️ Cool and refrigerate:
Once the jam reaches the desired consistency, remove it from the heat and allow it to cool naturally. Then transfer it to a clean glass container and refrigerate for at least one hour before serving.
