Sweet Tender Corn Fritters: A Delicate Bite from Cuban Cuisine
These sweet tender corn fritters are a simple yet irresistible gem of Cuban cuisine. With a soft interior, a slightly crisp exterior, and the subtle aroma of anise, they’re perfect for ending a meal or enjoying a relaxed afternoon with family or friends.
🥣 Ingredients Needed:
- 1 cup ground tender corn
- 5 tablespoons white sugar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 beaten egg
- ½ teaspoon anise seeds
- Lard or vegetable oil for frying
👩🍳 How to Prepare Them:
Start by crushing the anise seeds in a mortar until they are well broken down. Then, in a large bowl, beat the egg and mix it with the sugar, salt, and crushed anise.
Add the ground tender corn and stir until you obtain a smooth and manageable batter. Heat the lard or oil in a wide, deep skillet until it reaches about 370°F (approximately 190°C).
Using a small spoon, drop little portions of batter into the hot fat, making sure they don’t stick together. Fry them gradually to maintain a constant temperature and prevent them from being raw inside.
When they’re golden and crispy, remove them with a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to absorb excess fat. If you wish, you can sprinkle white sugar over them while they’re still warm.
