Cuban Malanga Cream Soup: A Velvety Cuban Delight That Warms the Soul

A classic that combines smoothness, flavor, and tradition. Malanga is a tropical root, similar to taro, widely used in Cuban cuisine for its creamy texture and delicate flavor. This Cuban malanga cream soup is a comforting, velvety dish that evokes family meals and the warmth of traditional Cuban kitchens. Perfect for cooler days or whenever you crave a nourishing, homemade soup.

🥔 Ingredients:

  • 1 pound of white malanga (peeled and chopped)
  • 4 cups of seasoned chicken broth
  • 5 garlic cloves
  • 1 small onion
  • 2 slices of bacon (chopped into small pieces)
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
  • 4 ounces of cream cheese
  • 2 tablespoons of butter
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • ½ cup of warm milk
  • Grated cheese (mozzarella or parmesan, optional)

👨‍🍳 Step-by-Step Preparation

1. Boil the malanga

Peel, wash, and cut the malanga into small pieces. Place it in a pot with the chicken broth and cook over medium-high heat for about 25 minutes, or until the malanga is very tender.

2. Prepare the sauté

Meanwhile, fry the bacon with the oil in a skillet until it releases its fat and becomes crispy. Remove it and, using the same fat, sauté the finely chopped onion. Add the crushed garlic with a pinch of salt and cook until golden and fragrant.

3. Combine the ingredients

Once the malanga is cooked, transfer it to a large pot with some of the broth. Add the sautéed mixture, cream cheese, butter, salt, and pepper. Mash everything together, then blend until you achieve a smooth, creamy texture with no lumps.

4. Adjust the consistency

Gradually stir in the warm milk until the desired texture is reached. If you prefer a lighter cream, add a little more of the cooking broth.

5. Heat and serve

Return the mixture to the stove and heat gently without boiling. Serve hot in bowls and top with crispy bacon.
