Cuban Majarete Served in a Clay Bowl.

Cuban Majarete: A Beloved Dessert of the Countryside Table

Majarete is one of the most emblematic desserts of Cuban country cuisine. Made with fresh corn and cow’s milk, its smooth texture and delicate aroma of cinnamon and lemon make it an essential recipe for those who love traditional Cuban sweets. Here’s how to prepare it in detail.

🌽 Required Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of ground fresh corn
  • 5 cups of whole milk
  • 2 cups of refined white sugar
  • 1 small piece of lemon peel
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • Ground cinnamon (for garnish)

👩‍🍳 Preparing the Mixture:

Place the ground corn in a large pot and mix well with the milk. Then strain this mixture using a fine sieve, transferring it to another container. This straining process should be repeated at least three times to remove the corn fiber and obtain a fine cream.

🔥 Cooking the Majarete:

Once strained, add the salt, sugar, lemon peel, and cinnamon stick. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly to prevent sticking. After about 30 minutes, the mixture should reach a thick, creamy consistency.

Pour the hot majarete into individual bowls, preferably made of clay, and sprinkle ground cinnamon on top. Let them cool to room temperature before refrigerating.
