Traditional Cuban Tomato Sweet: A Classic Dessert You Can’t Miss

Within Cuban home-style desserts, there are recipes that stand out for their simplicity and impressive results. Tomato in syrup is one of them, a preparation where the fruit slowly transforms into a soft, aromatic, and delicate dessert, perfect to finish a family meal or share with friends.

🍅 Ingredients

  • 12 ripe plum tomatoes (Roma tomatoes)
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • Peel of 1 lemon
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Salt to taste
  • Enough water

👩‍🍳 Step-by-step preparation

Start by heating a pot with plenty of water until it reaches a boil. Meanwhile, wash the tomatoes thoroughly and make a small cross-shaped cut on one end to make peeling easier.

Once the water is boiling, add the tomatoes and remove the pot from the heat, letting them rest for about five minutes. This process helps the skin loosen easily.

Remove the tomatoes, peel them, cut them in half, and remove the seeds, trying to keep the shape of whole segments.

In another pot, prepare the syrup with water, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, lemon peel, and a pinch of salt. Stir gently until the sugar is completely dissolved.

Add the tomato segments to the syrup and cook over medium heat for about 35 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

When the tomatoes are tender and the syrup has reached the desired consistency, remove from heat and let it cool to room temperature.

🔥 Ideal texture point

The final result should show soft but firm tomato segments, coated in a glossy syrup that slightly thickens as it cools, enhancing its flavor.
