Cuban Virginia Cream: Creamy, Smooth, and Full of Flavor

A comforting preparation that combines delicacy and flavor in every spoonful. This Virginia cream is an exquisite option within Cuban cuisine, characterized by its silky texture and the pleasant contrast of small cubes of ham. Its balance between simple ingredients and a refined result makes it an excellent choice to start any meal with elegance.

🧾 Ingredients:

  • 4 tablespoons of butter
  • 4 tablespoons of all-purpose wheat flour
  • 1 ½ cups of milk
  • 1 liter of chicken or beef broth, previously prepared
  • ½ cup of ham cut into small cubes
  • Grated gouda or Swiss cheese (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • Ground black pepper to taste
  • Nutmeg to taste

👨‍🍳 Detailed Preparation

1. Heat the liquids

Place the broth and milk in a saucepan and bring them to medium heat until they are very hot, without allowing them to boil. Keep this mixture reserved.

2. Prepare the flour

Sift the flour together with the salt to prevent lumps and set aside for later use.

3. Make the creamy base

Melt the butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Gradually add the flour, stirring constantly until fully incorporated and lightly golden.

4. Incorporate the liquids

Slowly add the hot broth and milk mixture, stirring continuously to achieve a smooth texture. Add black pepper and nutmeg to taste.

5. Slow cooking

Let it cook over low heat for 20 to 30 minutes, stirring frequently. If the consistency becomes too thick, you can adjust it with more liquid.

6. Add cheese (optional)

If you choose to include cheese, this is the moment to add it, stirring until it melts completely and provides extra creaminess while enhancing the flavor.

7. Add the ham

Add the ham, reserving a small portion for garnish. Stir gently and cook for a few additional minutes.

8. Serve

Remove from heat and serve hot in individual bowls, topping with the reserved ham.
