Homemade Pumpkin Flan: Original Cuban Flavor
Pumpkin flan is a sweet temptation that combines the smoothness of traditional flan with the delicate flavor of spiced pumpkin. Its creamy texture, together with a bright golden caramel, makes it the perfect dessert to enjoy on any special occasion. Learn how to easily prepare it at home.
🎃 Ingredients you will need:
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 3 eggs
- 1 tablespoon pumpkin spice (optional)
- 1 pinch of salt
- 1 can condensed milk
- 1 can evaporated milk
- 2 cups pumpkin purée
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
🍂 Preparing the pumpkin purée:
Peel the pumpkin and cut it into medium pieces. Cook them in boiling water until soft. Mash the cooked pumpkin with a fork or potato masher. Then place it over a strainer to remove excess water and measure two cups of the resulting purée.
🍮 Making the caramel:
In a medium pot, mix the 3/4 cup sugar with 2 tablespoons of water. Cook over medium-high heat without stirring until it melts and reaches a deep amber color. Pour the hot caramel into the bottom and sides of the flan mold, coating it well. Let it harden.
👩🍳 Preparing the flan mixture:
Place the eggs, condensed milk, evaporated milk, pumpkin spice, vanilla, pumpkin purée, and pinch of salt in a blender. Blend on low speed until all ingredients are combined. Strain the mixture and pour it into the caramelized mold.
🔥 Cooking the flan:
Preheat the oven to 350 °F (175 °C). Place the mold inside a deep baking pan with water covering more than half of the mold (bain-marie). Bake for approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. Starting at the 1-hour mark, check every 15 minutes by inserting a toothpick: if it comes out clean, the flan is ready.
❄️ Cooling and unmolding:
Remove from the oven and let it cool at room temperature for 2 hours. Cover the mold and refrigerate for at least 4 hours. To unmold, run a thin knife around the edge, cover with a plate, and flip quickly. Remove the mold carefully so the caramel slides smoothly over the flan.
