Mango Slices in Syrup: A Homemade Cuban Dessert Everyone Loves

Mango slices in syrup are one of those traditional homemade desserts that bring back memories of our grandmothers' kitchens. The natural sweetness of ripe mangoes blends perfectly with the warm aroma of cinnamon and the delicate citrus touch of lemon, creating a simple, refreshing, and flavorful dessert that can be enjoyed at any time of the year.

🥭 Ingredients:

  • 4 medium ripe mangoes
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • Peel of 1 lemon
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • Enough water to cover the mango slices

👩‍🍳 Preparation:

Wash the mangoes thoroughly, peel them, and cut them into medium-sized slices, removing the pit. Try to keep the slices as uniform in thickness as possible so they cook evenly.

Place the mango slices in a large saucepan and add enough water to cover them completely. Add a pinch of salt and cook over medium-high heat until the water begins to boil.

Reduce the heat to medium, then add the sugar, the lemon peel, and the cinnamon stick. Continue cooking for about 25 minutes, stirring very gently from time to time to prevent the mango slices from breaking apart or sticking to the bottom of the pan.

Once the syrup begins to thicken and the mango slices become glossy and slightly translucent, remove the saucepan from the heat. Let the dessert rest for about 30 minutes, allowing the flavors to develop even further.

When it has cooled to room temperature, transfer the mango slices together with the syrup to a glass or ceramic serving dish. Refrigerate for at least one hour before serving to fully enjoy its refreshing flavor.
